North Tapanuli, NINNA.ID– It was an exciting day for me. For the very first time, I brought a group of foreign tourists from a travel agent to Sipoholon Hot Springs. I had been here many times before, but usually just to relax and enjoy the soothing water.
This time was different—our aim was not to bathe but also to explore and learn the story behind this natural wonder.
Discovering the Source
Sipoholon is located in Situmeang Habinsaran Village, North Tapanuli. Many people know it as a place to enjoy a warm sulfur bath, but not everyone realizes where the water comes from.
The hot spring flows straight out of sandy white hills, believed to be the remains of an ancient eruption of Mount Martimbang. The water temperature ranges from 40–70°C, and this is the only hot spring in North Tapanuli that flows directly from a hilltop.
From the main road, you can already see steam rising into the sky, a sign of the earth’s energy at work.
Beauty and Benefits
Walking closer, my group was amazed by the view. The hills shine in shades of white and yellow, and the steam creates a mystical atmosphere. The pools below are well-maintained by local businesses, making them not just clean but also perfect for photos.
Many visitors believe the sulfur water helps soften the skin and even has healing effects. Whether that’s true or not, one thing is sure—the warm soak leaves you feeling refreshed. Some of my guests even said their tiredness disappeared after dipping their feet in.
A Favorite Spot for Travelers
Sipoholon is very easy to reach: only 10 minutes from Tarutung town, around an hour from Silangit International Airport, or about six hours by car from Medan. That’s why it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region.
There are more than ten natural baths spread between the village and Tarutung city. Some pools are modern and private, while others remain simple and traditional, giving visitors a chance to experience the local way.
More Than Just a Bath
Sipoholon is more than a tourist destination—it’s also an important geothermal area. The hot springs that part of the Martimbang geothermal field, located at 1,800 meters above sea level.
In fact, the geothermal energy here has even been used to supply electricity in North Tapanuli.
Because of this, Sipoholon is not just for relaxation but also for education and geotourism. Students, researchers, and travelers come here to see firsthand how volcanic activity shapes the land.
Why You Should Visit
For many travelers, North Sumatra means Lake Toba. But if you want to experience something unique, you must visit Sipoholon Hot Springs. It combines natural beauty, healing waters, and fascinating geology in one place.
That day, as I guided my group through the steaming hills, I felt proud to introduce them to this hidden gem of North Tapanuli. And as we ended the visit, I knew one thing for sure: Sipoholon is not just a place to bathe—it’s a place to wonder, learn, and feel connected with the earth itself.
